Cord Blood Banking

At the time of your baby's birth, you have an option to collect and save the cord blood. It is rich in blood stem cells that can be lifesaving to the child and other family members. Cord blood is used today in treating 70 diseases including leukemia, other cancers, and blood disorders. Doctors are working to develop stem cell treatments for heart disease, juvenile diabetes, brain injury and more.

The blood is stored in a special, secure blood bank and later can be used for lifesaving therapies at the time of your choosing.

Your baby will be a perfect match for the cells, and the baby's mother can also use the cells due to her carrying the child during pregnancy. The most common use for cord blood stem cells is between siblings. Any family member who is a suitable genetic match may use the cells if needed.

A number of companies provide private cord blood banking services. There is an initial setup charge of $1,200-1,900 and an annual fee of approximately $125 for as long as your deposit is stored in the private bank. Several of the companies allow for a baby registry allowing family members to donate toward the cost of the cord blood banking services. Northwest Hospital currently does not provide public donation. We encourage you to discuss any questions you may have and your options with your doctor.
